Precautions and Contraindications
It is often advisable to consult with a professional before using essential oils, especially if you are using prescribed medicines for a particular health concern. You are welcome to email Four Blooms with questions or concerns.
Please observe the following guidelines:
• Never exceed the recommended dosages.
• Do not use the same oil all the time. For maximum benefit use a blend of oils or alternate essential oils weekly.
• For children and people with sensitive skin use a maximum 1% dilution, (1 drop to every 10 ml of carrier oil).
• Do not take internally (unless prescribed by a licensed physician).
Also please note the following particular guidelines:
Pregnancy Avoid lavender during the first trimester. Avoid the following throughout pregnancy: Basil, cedarwood, clary sage, fennel, jasmine, juniper, marjoram, myrrh, peppermint, rose , rosemary, sage, thyme. Use half recommended dosage when you do use essential oils.
Epilepsy Avoid: Fennel, sage
High blood pressure Avoid: rosemary, sage, thyme
Photosensitivity The following oils when used directly on the skin may cause the skin to burn more readily if exposed to strong ultra-violet light from the sun or from a sun lamp: Bergamot, lime, lemon
Skin irritations The following may cause skin irritation in people with sensitive skin: Basil, cinnamon, clove, lemon, lemongrass, thyme and tea tree
Babies Use only Roman chamomile, lavender, mandarin, neroli, and rose essential oils with children under 1 year old.
Breast cancer Avoid: cypress, clary sage
